Australian doctor-led telehealth

Online pathology referral consultations

Blood tests and other pathology investigations are most useful when they answer a clinical question. A doctor can review your symptoms, history and previous results, then decide which tests—if any—are appropriate.

Suitability

When an online consultation may help

May be suitable

  • Symptoms or risk factors that may warrant targeted laboratory testing
  • Monitoring of a known condition or medicine
  • Discussion of previous abnormal results and appropriate follow-up

Telehealth may not be enough

  • Emergency symptoms or results requiring immediate hospital assessment
  • Requests for broad, repeated or non-indicated screening panels
  • Concerns that require physical examination before choosing tests

Clinical assessment

What may happen during the consultation

The doctor may provide a pathology request, recommend no testing, arrange follow-up, or direct you to in-person care. Results require appropriate review and do not diagnose a condition in isolation.

Urgent care

Do not wait for an online appointment in an emergency

Call Triple Zero (000) for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, signs of stroke, collapse, severe bleeding, a severe allergic reaction, or any condition that appears life-threatening. For urgent but non-life-threatening advice, call 1800MEDICARE on 1800 633 422.
