Practical health guide
Preparing for a pathology test and follow-up
A pathology request should answer a clinical question. Understanding preparation and follow-up helps avoid unclear or missed results.
Ask why the test is needed
Confirm which tests are requested, what they are intended to assess, and whether previous results affect the plan. More testing is not always better.
Follow preparation instructions
Some tests require fasting, timing, medication considerations or a particular collection method. Do not stop medicines unless instructed by a qualified clinician.
Confirm result follow-up
Ask when results are expected, who will review them and how you will be contacted. Seek prompt care if symptoms worsen rather than waiting for routine results. Pathology provider fees and Medicare eligibility can vary.
