How electronic prescriptions work in Australia
An electronic prescription is a digital alternative to a paper prescription. It does not change the clinical assessment required before a medicine is prescribed.
Receiving a token
When a medicine is prescribed electronically, a unique token can generally be sent by SMS or email. Check that your contact details are correct and keep the token private.
Using it at a pharmacy
A participating pharmacy scans the token to access the prescription. A new token is usually issued for each repeat after dispensing.
Prescribing is not automatic
The doctor must consider the medicine, indication, dose, interactions, monitoring and whether telehealth is adequate. Some medicines or situations require in-person care or cannot be managed by this service.
