OSHC and OVHC claims for telehealth consultations
Some OSHC and OVHC policies may reimburse part of a consultation, but benefits differ between insurers and policies. EUCA MD cannot determine or guarantee your entitlement.
Know which cover you hold
OSHC is designed for international students, while OVHC is commonly used by other temporary visa holders and overseas visitors. These products are separate from Medicare and each insurer offers different policy levels.
Check the exact product name, membership number, policy dates and whether telehealth with a private medical doctor is included. Visa requirements do not mean every consultation is reimbursed in full.
Ask the insurer before booking
Contact the insurer using the number or app on your membership information. Describe the service as a private telehealth consultation with an Australian-registered medical doctor and ask what benefit, waiting period, exclusion or provider rule applies.
Ask whether you must use a direct-billing network or whether you can pay first and submit a claim.
- Is private telehealth covered under my policy?
- Is a provider number or particular receipt wording required?
- Will I pay the full fee first?
- What gap or excess may remain?
- How long do I have to submit the claim?
Paying and keeping documents
You may need to pay the consultation fee upfront and then claim reimbursement. Keep the itemised receipt, date, provider details and proof of payment. The insurer may request additional information.
EUCA MD can provide its usual receipt and provider information but cannot alter clinical or billing records to fit a policy. A successful claim and the amount paid are decisions for the insurer.
Medicare and reciprocal arrangements differ
Most international students rely on OSHC rather than Medicare. Some overseas visitors may have limited Medicare access through a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, but eligibility and services covered vary.
Do not assume that holding a visa, Medicare card or reciprocal entitlement automatically makes a private telehealth consultation reimbursable. Confirm your circumstances with Medicare or the insurer.
Location and clinical rules still apply
You must be physically located in Australia during an EUCA MD consultation. Insurance cover does not change that requirement or guarantee that telehealth is clinically suitable.
Prescriptions, documents, tests and referrals remain subject to medical assessment. Seek urgent or emergency care through the appropriate service rather than waiting for insurance confirmation.
Common questions
Can EUCA MD guarantee my OSHC or OVHC claim?
No. Benefits and reimbursement are controlled by your insurer and policy.
Do you direct bill every insurer?
Do not assume direct billing. Check the current payment and claim process before booking.
What should I keep for a claim?
Keep the itemised receipt, proof of payment and any other document your insurer requests.
