Our Brain Health Check combines advanced imaging techniques and blood tests:

• MRA Head: Magnetic Resonance Angiography to visualize the brain’s blood vessels and detect aneurysms or artery narrowing without radiation or invasive IV contrast agents.
• Bilateral Carotid Duplex Ultrasound: Ultrasound imaging to assess blood flow in the carotid arteries, detecting narrowing or blockages that may raise stroke risk.
• Lipid Panel: Blood tests to measure cholesterol levels, assessing cardiovascular disease and stroke risk.
• TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): A test to evaluate thyroid function, which can affect brain health and stroke risk.
• HbA1c: Measures blood glucose levels over the past 2-3 months to assess diabetes risk, which can increase the likelihood of stroke and cognitive impairment.

Procedure

During the Brain Health Check, the MRI and MRA scans typically take 30-60 minutes. These non-invasive procedures create detailed images of the brain and blood vessels without using ionising radiation or invasive IV contrast. The Carotid Duplex Ultrasound is painless and takes around 30 minutes, using sound waves to assess blood flow in the carotid arteries. You will be asked to lie still for all procedures to ensure accurate results, and the radiology team will provide instructions on any necessary preparation.

Results

Within seven business days, our partner radiologists and pathologists will prepare a comprehensive report based on your scans and tests. This report will be reviewed by our doctors, who will discuss any significant findings with you during a follow-up consultation. Our doctors will offer advice on next steps, which may include lifestyle changes, further investigations, or specialist referrals.

Important Considerations

While MRI and MRA scans are effective for assessing brain and vascular health, they cannot detect all conditions. Blood tests such as the lipid panel and HbA1c must also be interpreted in the context of your overall health. Risks are minimal but may include discomfort from lying still during imaging or minor irritation from the ultrasound gel. Additionally, some individuals, such as those with metallic implants or a pacemaker, are not eligible for MRI scans due to safety concerns.
